Future Aliens

Central St Martins, BA Ceramic Design. 2024.

What Happens When we stop living and become artefact?

Future Aliens is a collection of works and performances that asks the question: how will we be remembered by what we leave behind?

It turns the viewer into an archaeologist, excavating their future through alien eyes. It blends ephemerality of performance and improvisational storytelling with the permanence of ceramic to explore our relationship with the past, present and future. This work is a nostalgia trap designed to draw in the audience like a lantern fish, using familiar objects from the near past as a lure. Hidden in the screens are images of people in conversation that can only be seen under UV light. It captures the imagination of the viewer and takes them to a place outside of time.

By projecting videos of the storytellers onto their artifact-selves. The subjects become ghosts of themselves. By mimicking the forms of ancient burial artifacts, we see ourselves at our most vulnerable, exploring the fundamentals of life, death, and remembrance.

Future Aliens challenges the audience’s perceptions of their place inside the continuum of human existence. It creates a place outside of time to reflect on the consequences of our actions.

WHen we die we leave behind the evidence of our lives in our bodies and our stuff.
